Late last night my temporary roommate, Robyn, arrived. She will be staying with me for two weeks until my permanent roomie comes and Robyn moves into her own apartment (apparently they don’t have this whole housing thing down to a T). It has been amazing to have a companion here these past 24 hours. I wished so much that I would have been staying with someone my first few days, it would have made a world of difference. It was easy to recall the flood of emotions, most of all the feeling of just plain being overwhelmed, that I felt just over a week ago. It is extremely easy to relate to everything that Robyn is thinking and feeling and I want desperately to provide for her everything that I wish I had upon my arrival here.
Today we had the day off work (another Korean holiday–’the day the sky opened up and Korea became Korea.’ Something like that). Robyn and I spent the whole day walking around our area of Seoul. I was amazed by how much I had learned in the past week and a half… how many things I had to share with her about the school, about the neighborhood, about survival in Seoul in general. Robyn has never traveled outside of Canada before (yes, she does say ‘ay’ ALL THE TIME) and she has also never lived in a big city, so she is really overwhelmed by everything new. We really get along. She is grateful for my help and I am grateful for her companionship. I feel like I have finally made a new friend in Korea.
